How much does it cost?
The price of the item you wish to paint (anything from £4 to £40) plus a studio fee of £4 per session. The average prices of the most popular items (mugs, plates, bowls etc) are between £6 and £10. Your average spend would be between £10 and £14 per person.
What is a studio fee?
The studio fee covers you for the use of the studio, glazing and firing. One person can paint as many items as they want for a single studio fee. If you don’t finish an item in one session, you can leave it with us and come back and finish it another day, for a reduced studio fee of £2.
Why charge a studio fee?
When you visit Fired-Art you will see how much time, money and effort we have put in to make your visit memorable. To offer such a unique service at a reasonable price, we make the charge to cover the use of our materials (brushes, paints, stencils, stamps etc), the glazing of your finished pot and not to mention, the 12 hour firing of your piece in our kiln!
How long does it take?
An average visit to the studio takes 2 hours but you could spend all day with us if you wish. Younger children tend to not take so long to paint their pot.
Do I have to leave the item with you?
To run the studio safely, we offer non-toxic water based paints called ‘under-glazes’. For you to use the painted item as dinner-ware, we need to over glaze the po andt then fire it in our kiln. Items are usually ready within 2-4 days (sometimes longer in busy periods). You will see the difference between a glazed and unglazed pot if you visit Fired-Art. It is well worth the wait for a unique hand-painted pot that should last a life-time.
What if I need the pot urgently?
We do offer both a postal service and an overnight firing service in our ‘baby’ kiln at an additional minimum cost.
Or you could paint with our ceramic acrylic paints but these MUST be for ornamental use only. Using acrylic paints means you can take the item home with you on the same day.
Do you need to be artistic?
Quite the opposite in fact. We help you out with templates and stencils. People who claim to have no artistic talent and have tried Fired-Art have been amazed at how good their simple but colourful designs look. Bold coloured squares on a mug can look fantastic. Come in and see for yourself the samples that have been painted or check out the Gallery section of this website for some recently painted masterpieces.
Do you get help?
As much, or as little, as you need. The Fired-Art team are extremely friendly people – none of us are professional artists but we do know what colours we have in stock!! We just enjoy the idea of letting others have a go at painting a pot – it’s about having fun. All we do is show you how.
Can the items be used in a dishwasher?
Whilst the glazed piece is dishwasher safe, as with everything, if you treasure it we would recommend that you hand wash only to keep the pot looking it’s best.
Do you do commissions?
We can produce simple commission pieces such as a Wedding Anniversary or special Birthday Plates. We use design templates and can add whatever wording or design you like. Or why not give one of our unique Celebration Plates.
Can we paint at home?
Yes. You can take the unpainted pottery home with you. We can provide brushes and paints for you to take home for a small refundable deposit (£4). Bring your painted items back to us and we will glaze and fire them for you. There is a firing fee of £4 for 1-2 items, £9 for 3-5 items and £15 for 6-10 items.
